From the management
Welcome to the CEC conference Science says! Mobilizing the knowledge of our time: The IPCC and IPBES reports, filled with activities to raise awareness of the knowledge of our times on environmental and climate issues! It will be a place for science and society/stakeholders to meet, discuss and exchange expertise on common issues. The aim of the conference is to mobilize how science can connect and strengthen synergies between the intergovernmental panels’ coming reports, and to find common solutions and ways forward between science and society to the largest challenges of our time. Find out more on the conference website, which will be updated continuously. Registration is now open, register before 31rd of March. CEC affiliates and employees are invited to most of the activities on the 23rd. Take the opportunity to share your project during the afternoon mingle! Show results or take the chance to get new collaborators in future projects, bring a poster or use the standing tables to display your work. CEC will arrange two “High School Days” on 4 and 12 March when high school students from the region of Skåne are invited to learn more about our research and our educations in environmental science. For more info, see the enclosed programme (in Swedish) or contact Stina Johannesson.
Time to plan your field work? In addition to the outdoor work, field work involves administrative tasks and responsibilities. At the CEC Staff web you can now find guidelines and other documents that may be helpful to you. To ensure that all assistants have an employment before starting to work, you have to fill in a form (new this year) and send it to the HR administrator well in advance before the fieldwork begins. Please see the guidelines for more information.
A new list of who is in kitchen duty is now posted in the CEC lunch room (also attached to this mail). If you have been assigned a week that doesn’t fit you, it’s your own responsibility to find someone to change weeks with and also to mark it on the list in the kitchen. One of the tasks on the list of duties is to clean out the two fridges every Friday, something that is often missed. Also in the CEC kitchen there is right now a shopping bag full of abandoned food containers. Come and collect what is yours, on Friday the 28th it becomes a free-for-all and anyone can take what’s left, the rest get thrown away.
People
We are happy to announce that the following persons will stay at CEC for some more time: Milda Puciate will stay for one more year working as a researcher on the role of microbes in physical soil carbon stabilization, researcher Helene Serra will stay until June, and Lena Söderberg will stay as an administrator until the end of August. We also welcome postdoc Jasmine Livingston back from her parental leave in March. She will share office with Océane Bartholomée at floor 2.
CECs HR administrator Irene Bergstrand will be on leave during March-May. During that period most of CECs HR matters will be handled by the Faculty of Science. My Geborek from the Faculty will be in Irene’s office at CEC every Wednesday afternoon, and else she could be reached by phone 24853 or my [dot] geborek [at] science [dot] lu [dot] se (e-mail). Time reporting will not be handled by the Faculty, instead you should contact Lena Söderberg.

CECs Friday breakfast fika is served from 9:30 to 10:15 in the CEC lunch room and most Fridays a presentation starts at 10:15. On February 21 there is no talk due to a school holiday. Next Friday on February 28 Charlotta Turner will talk on Green and sustainable analytical chemistry.
Tomorrow on February 20, Skåne R User Group is organizing a workshop Use this! Test that! Package everything! on producing R packages together with FooCafe in Malmö. Please read more and register here.
On February 26, there is a CEC Fellows concept seminar on Resilience, with short presentations from different research fields to straighten out the concept of Resilience as a research perspective. Register before February 21.
The two final seminars on the theme Sensing Nature from Within, a collaboration between Moderna Museet Malmö and the Agenda 2030 Graduate School, are held on 27 February and 6 March. For more information on the seminars, see the Lund University Staff Pages.
On March 6 there is a Workshop for supervision of interdisciplinary PhD projects. Read more and register on the link.
On March 11 at 13:30 Martijn van Praagh will give his docent lecture in Environmental Science on The natural scientist’s dilemma: risk perception in environmental risk assessments in the Red Room in the Ecology building.
On March 12 from 9 to 12 there is a course in how to do a risk-assessment in KLARA given by Helene Bracht Jørgensen at the Biology Department. KLARA is our chemical database and even a place where you should do risk-assessments as soon as you handle any kind of chemicals – also kits used in DNA analysis. So in this course Helene will show how it works and what you have to do. The course is primarily for student supervisors and PhD students working in labs. PhD students, postdocs and researchers are welcome to attend a Neutron Imaging doctoral school organized by LINXS during 23-26 of March. Read more and register here.

The CEC spring conference: Science says! Mobilizing the knowledge of our time: The IPCC and IPBES reports, 23-24 of April, register before March 31. CEC affiliates and employees are invited to most of the activities on the 23rd. The activities open to you appear automatically when you choose what group you identify yourself with in the registration form. The BECC/MERGE yearly spring meeting is part of the conference, hence as a BECC/MERGE researcher please choose one of these groups when you register.
This year’s CEC PhD students spring meeting will take place in Lund on May 14 to 15. In a two-day event format, CEC PhD students will present their current work via oral and poster presentations. It will be an event open for anyone to attend, but registration is required. It is an excellent opportunity to get to know on-going research at CEC, and an excellent arena to get friendly feedback from other researchers and students at CEC.
CEC will arrange or participate in three major public outreach events this year
CEC-researchers participate in a lot of other popular outreach activities too, of course. The events listed here are the ones where CEC as “organisation” is the arranger. If you find it difficult to prioritize between different public outreach activities, you are welcome to discuss it with anna_maria [dot] erling [at] cec [dot] lu [dot] se (Anna Maria Erling) or stina [dot] johannesson [at] cec [dot] lu [dot] se (Stina Johannesson).
The Sustainability Week, 20-26 April
As you know, CEC arranges the conference Science Says! Mobilizing the knowledge of our time: The IPCC and IPBES reports 23-24 April, with some public seminars.
CEC also arranges a seminar about Room for children in the City during the Sustainability Week, Monday 20 April at 14.00-16.30. More information will come soon.
Lund Culture Night, 19 September

The Lund University Future Week, 12-18 October
The theme this year is Forces in motion. CEC will participate with a seminar during the week. If you have any ideas or suggestions, you are welcome to contact anna_maria [dot] erling [at] cec [dot] lu [dot] se (Anna Maria Erling). As you could read in the latest newsletter, a start-up meeting will be held 24 February.
Good to know is also that this year’s Researchers Night, 25-25 September, will have the theme Climate, Sustainability and Environment. Lund University is participating through Vattenhallen. Researchers at CEC are very welcome to engage in the event. More information will come at the Friday Fika 6 mars. While waiting for this, you can read more here or talk to Ullrika Sahlin.

Lina Herbertsson was interviewed in Göteborgs Posten and SVT about a study that shows that bumblebees risk mass extinction because of climate change.
Henrik Smith is interviewed on how the new collaborative initiative LU Land, which includes a wide range of stakeholders, can contribute to a sustainable land use through potentially new collaborations and research projects, in an article on the LU newspage (in Swedish, will be available in English shortly).
“Beyond the climate anxiety, there is sadness and hope” according to the participants at the latest ClimBEco winter meeting. Read more about the meeting and input from climate psychologist Frida Hylander in the article on the CEC newspage.
The global news network for higher education University World News reports on the development of the Agenda 2030 Graduate School, Sweden's first research school focusing on the UN Sustainability Goals and the 2030 Agenda, which is organized under CEC and the Sustainability Forum.
Do you need help from an intern and want to influence the next generation?
The organization Vetenskap i Skolan (VIS, Science in school) funds scholarships for high school students and is now looking for hosts. The students receive 6000 SEK scholarships from the Research Network (Forskningsnätet Skåne) to work ten days at any institution and get in touch with researchers. (Note, for laboratory work the student has to be 18 years old.) Contact cerina [dot] wittbom [at] cec [dot] lu [dot] se (Cerina Wittbom) if you are interested, before 2nd of March.
LU news
Sign up for the 2020 Lundaloppet run
You can now sign up for this year’s Lundaloppet run, which will take place on 9 May. As usual, Lund University will cover the cost of the registration fee and Lundaloppet T-shirt for all its employees. The registration deadline is 21 April. You can choose to run five or ten kilometres. There is also a five-kilometre untimed class. You must participate as part of a team of five. The best idea is to find colleagues and form a team together. Otherwise the organisers will include you in a suitable team. Read more about registration on the LU Staff Pages.
Pilot study about exam service
A pilot study about the management of exams has been carried out with an aim to examine how exams are currently conducted at Lund University, and identify opportunities for improvement and synergy effects. The pilot study highlights five interconnected development areas that would create a simpler, more legally secure, more efficient and more professional exam process for teaching staff, students and administrators. The development areas highlighted is for example a central exam service for premises booking and a more developed digital environment. Read more at LU Staff pages

The application period for the position of vice-chancellor has ended
The application period for the position of vice-chancellor ended on 2 February, which was also the final date for the nomination of candidates by staff and students. The Recruitment Committee will now move on to the next stage of the process, which is to decide on the candidates who are to be called to a first interview. The committee plans to conduct the interviews in March. Once it is known which of the candidates will attend the first interview, their names will be announced. Competitive intelligence: the increasing difficulty of being a university
The University finds itself in a time of paradoxes. At the same time as the EU, via its framework programmes, works for openness and mobility for researchers and students, there are increasing nationalistic and protectionist trends. In addition, the trust and hope that society has in research as a solution for global challenges is being unsettled by the spread of knowledge relativism. This is the situation outlined in LU’s new competitive intelligence report, which was on the agenda at the University Board’s latest meeting. The 57-page report was produced by the Planning Office in cooperation with others including LU’s Risk Management Committee and the Research, Research Programmes and Education boards. In addition to the paradoxes, the University has never faced such a highly competitive situation as the present one.
