Focus Hanöbukten

Within this research area we investigate species, ecosystems, water and contaminants to better understand how the Baltic Sea is affected by different stressors.

The Baltic Sea is one of the world's most polluted and species-sensitive brackish seas. Disturbed ecosystems, climate change, eutrophication, algal blooms, exposure to multiple toxic contaminants have transformed the whole environment in the area. The southern Baltic Sea, including the entire eastern coast of Skåne and the bay area Hanöbukten, is particularly exposed to several parallel environmental challenges that affect both water, coast and organisms. Concrete measures that can contribute to healthier seas and in the long term improve the situation in the region are currently few.

Within this research area we investigate species, ecosystems, water and contaminants to better understand how the Baltic Sea is affected by different stressors, using different techniques and combining disciplines to answer interdisciplinary questions. The research is conducted in collaboration with Marint centrum in Simrishamn.
