Support to research applications and projects

CEC provides assistance to researchers applying for external grants which contribute to integrated environmental and climate research. The support can be in kind and/or financial.
Below you also find information and links to support from the central organization of Lund University, during the application process as well as with agreements, data storager etc during the project lifetime.

In-kind support from CEC

In-kind support can be granted to applications by any researcher, postdoc or PhD student associated with CEC, BECC, MERGE or CEC Fellows. Also to applications for postdocs and other positions connected to CEC, BECC or MERGE where a CEC employee or CEC Fellow is involved, for example as host.

CEC provides in-kind support such as advice on adressing call criteria relating to:

  • Societal relevance
  • Stakeholder involvement
  • Communication and communication plans
  • Gender aspects of research content
  • Open access publication and open data

The primary contact for advice when writing research applications is research coordinator Marianne Hall
marianne [dot] hall [at] cec [dot] lu [dot] se (marianne[dot]hall[at]cec[dot]lu[dot]se)

For advice on stakeholder and user involvement you can also contact research coordinator Juliana Dänhardt
juliana [dot] danhardt [at] cec [dot] lu [dot] se (juliana[dot]danhardt[at]cec[dot]lu[dot]se)

For advice on development of communication plans you may also contact communications manager Anna Maria Erling

Financial support from CEC

For larger individual research grants, for example ERC grants, you can apply for funding to have the application reviewed by an external consultant (maximum SEK 10,000).

For larger research applications and consortium applications, for example within EU H2020/Horizon Europe, Mistra programs and KAW Advanced Research Grants, you can apply for financial resources for planning, meetings, writing etcetera (maximum SEK 20,000 expenditures, SEK 10,000 consultant, 1 month’s salary).

Financial support can be applied for by CEC employees and Fellows, as well as guest researchers at CEC. For larger strategic research applications, more than one group from the CEC environment must participate as applicant and/or the project should be coordinated from CEC.

•    Project information is to be presented on CEC’s website
•    CEC must be acknowledged where applicable

Acknowledgements to CEC will typically appear in journal papers, oral and poster presentations and project information material.

Large projects receiving support from CEC will also be asked to arrange seminars and/or workshops at CEC.

When you find an interesting call, please contact the CEC Research Coordinator to discuss what kind of support could be available.

In order to request financial support, you need to submit information on the intended research and what you intend to use the money for:

  • Funder and call (please also provide a link)
  • Preliminary title
  • Scope
  • Project partners
  • Management
  • Amount asked for (fill in a full cost calculation, link below)
  • In case you apply for running costs - what will you use the money for?
  • In case you apply for salary - who will be funded and for how many days?

The full cost application can be downloaded via this page (left margin):

Applying for funding on lu.se

E-mail the information requested in a word document together with the full cost application to the CEC Research Coordinator who will forward the application to the CEC Management group. Based on this information, the CEC Management group will decide whether to provide support and to what extent.

The extent of support will depend on the strategic value of the research to CEC, the expectations of success and available resources. An early dialogue between the applicant(s), the CEC Research Coordinator and the CEC Management group is encouraged.

The decision will typically be communicated within 2–4 weeks.

Support from the central organisation

Research Services offer researchers and research teams support and help on issues concerning external research funding. Research Services have special responsibility for the following funders and programmes: Swedish funding bodies with special requirements for central management, the EU framework programme Horizon 2020, and American federal funding bodies.

Research Services has compiled a “Funding paths for Excellence” guide of funding opportunities oriented towards basic research available in different career stages with an indicative list of expected merits and skills. The guide may be used in the strategic planning of researchers, supervisors, head of departments, team leaders and the like.

Data Management Plan (DMP)

Funders such as the Swedish Research Council (VR), Formas, the European Research Council (ERC) and Horizon Europe require a Data Management Plan (DMP) for all rewarded projects that generate research data. The DMP should describe how data will be managed, during the course of the research as well as afterwards.

The Library of Science offers an open online course on data management and data management plans: Introduction to data management plans and DMP Roadmap. More information and access to the online course here:
Link to the online course on canvas.education.lu.se

You can also learn more about data management and DMPs and find useful links on the Library of Science webpages about research data management.
