The Centre for Environmental and Climate Research, CEC, is a physical and virtual centre within Lund University's Faculty of Science.

You will find CEC in the Ecology Building on the north campus. We offer programmes on undergraduate and postgraduate levels and conduct research and collaboration in a wide range of areas related to environment, climate and sustainable development.

Our work is interdisciplinary, which permeates both education and research activities.

CEC has about eighty employees and extensive collaboration with researchers at other departments. Some twenty PhD students in environmental science are either employed at CEC or linked to the centre but employed by other departments.

Undergraduate education

CEC's undergraduate education is unique in that it is based on an interdisciplinary natural science foundation. We have some courses of our own, but most of the education is based on collaborations with other departments.

Bachelor’s programmes

  • Environmental science
  • Environment and health science

Master’s programmes

  • Environmental science with a natural science orientation
  • Environment and health science
  • Applied climate strategy
  • Strategic environmental work

Postgraduate education

CEC offers several opportunities for postgraduate studies.

  • PhD programme in environmental science: Leads to a doctoral degree, which normally takes four years
  • Bioeconomy: Graduate research school for doctoral students and researchers
  • ClimBEco: Two-year graduate research school for doctoral students
  • Agenda 2030 Graduate School

Research

There are a number of research groups within CEC and many ongoing research projects.

CEC coordinates two national strategic research areas:

  • BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in Changing Climate)
  • MERGE (ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system)

The research within BECC and MERGE is carried out as collaborations between several institutions at Lund University as well as other universities in Sweden.

ICOS Sweden, a research infrastructure for measuring data on greenhouse gases, has its organisational position at CEC. Measuring stations are located in Norunda and Hyltemossa.

CEC Fellows is a forum for exchange of ideas for researchers from all faculties at Lund University.

Collaboration

CEC's operations are based on interdisciplinary collaborations in both undergraduate and postgraduate education as well as research. Our activities are therefore to a large extent based on collaborations with other departments within Lund University and other educational institutions.

CEC has a prominent role in several environmental and climate initiatives at Lund University. We host:

  • Sustainability Forum
  • Climate-KIC
  • LU-Land

In addition, CEC cooperates with authorities, non-governmental organisations and the business community. Researchers at CEC carry out, for example on behalf of authorities, studies that can provide a basis for decision-making at different levels of society.
