Docentlecture: The natural scientist’s dilemma: risk perception in environmental risk assessments
Martijn van Praagh will give his docent lecture with the title "The natural scientist’s dilemma: risk perception in environmental risk assessments" in Environmental Science
Risks can be estimated and calculated. Different approaches have been developed, depending on the type of risk and in which societal sector it is undertaken. In order to assess risks stated by chemicals released into the environment, often no observed adverse effect levels of chemical substances are compared to concentrations actually measured in the environment, which in turn is used to estimate exposure to these chemicals. Human perception of risks is, however, not necessarily correlated to the elevation of risks. Is there a need to take into account risk perception in the process of environmental risk assessments?
The lecture will be held in English
