Theme 3: Contributing to adaptive governance of agro-ecosystems
The ultimate aim of theme 3 is to develop (web-based) tools that assist stakeholders and policy-makers in their decision-making by evaluating and visualizing consequences of policies and management actions on multiple ecosystem services under different governance regimes and future scenarios. Using validated ecological-economic models, we will generate potential outcomes (in terms of e.g. land-use, supply of multiple ecosystem services or farm incomes) for different management options and governance regimes in space and time under different future scenarios (e.g. changed governance structures, new forms of collaborations or changes in land-use and climatic conditions). The trade-off between ecosystem services and agricultural profit under different regimes and scenarios will be visualized by efficiency frontier curves.
To do this, we use a participatory approach involving stakeholders and policy-makers to explore and develop potential future scenarios for Swedish agriculture to use in our models. Inspired by Evidence-based Conservation, our work will also include evidence-based recommendations on how to promote and integrate landscape-based governance of ecosystem services into public and private decision-making. In addition, we will analyze costs and benefits of integrating conservation with farming compared with protected area approaches (i.e. compare land-sharing vs. land-sparing approaches).
